Simplifying Complex Workflows: Migrating from Alteryx to dbt

Migrating from Alteryx to dbt

A major event-based retail organization, with most of its annual revenue concentrated in a single week, needed to modernize its data transformation workflows to support high-frequency decision-making.

Their legacy Alteryx-based processes were slow to troubleshoot and difficult to maintain — putting real-time inventory decisions and revenue at risk.

Analytic Vizion migrated key transformation logic to DBT, running within the client’s existing Snowflake environment, streamlining performance and empowering the internal team with greater autonomy.

The Challenge

A fast-paced, event-driven organization depended on a short, high-impact window to generate the majority of its annual revenue. Success during this critical period hinged on having accurate, up-to-date analytics to support rapid decision-making.

However, the existing data infrastructure introduced friction and uncertainty:

  • Inefficient Workflows: Legacy transformation tools required significant effort to maintain and troubleshoot, often slowing down response times.
  • Delayed Issue Resolution: Pipeline errors or bugs could take 24–48 hours to fix and validate—risking disruptions during high-stakes operations.
  • Operational Risk: Without dependable, timely data, the organization faced the risk of missed revenue opportunities and diminished responsiveness.

The organization needed a modern, agile data infrastructure capable of delivering timely, trusted insights while reducing the overhead of maintenance and support.

The client expected a 24- to 48-hour turnaround for fixing issues during their peak week. With our new process, they solved it in under two hours—on their own.

Our Approach

Analytic Vizion was engaged to stabilize and modernize the client’s data engineering environment in advance of their peak revenue period. The team began with a thorough discovery process to assess which Alteryx workflows were most essential and best suited for migration. From there, the engagement followed a two-part strategy:

  • Initial Migration: Rebuilt Alteryx workflows in dbt within the client’s Snowflake environment, preserving core logic while ensuring functional equivalence.
  • Optimization & Enablement: Enhanced performance, reduced complexity, and delivered structured training to the client’s internal team, empowering them to maintain and extend the system independently.

By combining deep technical expertise with a focus on client enablement, the project delivered sustainable transformation without sacrificing agility during the most critical week of the year.

Alteryx (legacy ETL system – phased out)

dbt (Data Build Tool) – implemented as the new transformation layer

Snowflake – cloud data warehouse supporting centralized storage and processing

The Results

The engagement delivered measurable improvements across performance, agility, and client autonomy:

Under Budget, Over Delivered: The project was completed ahead of schedule and under budget, creating room for additional enhancements and reinforcing trust that led to follow-on engagements.

Significantly Faster Issue Resolution: The client reduced bug resolution time during peak operations from an estimated 24–48 hours to under 2 hours, allowing them to fix and validate issues independently.

Improved Operational Responsiveness: With 15-minute refresh cycles, the client gained near real-time visibility into sales trends, inventory levels, and environmental factors—enabling rapid simulations and inventory shifts.

Key Takeaways

Strategic Migration Enables Speed
Moving from GUI-based legacy systems to modular, code-based transformations significantly reduced maintenance time and improved reaction capabilities.

Enablement Is the Real Win
With Analytic Vizion’s training and support, the client was able to resolve issues independently—building internal confidence and self-sufficiency.

Reliable Data = Revenue Protection
Real-time visibility into sales and inventory allowed the client to dynamically respond to changing conditions, directly supporting revenue continuity during high-stakes periods.
